best driving corvair I ever drove, not without old car issues, and definitely not overburdened with power. it gets down the road.

Here’s my most recent Corvair encounter story.
A few weeks ago I was racing at Sears Point in my Lemons car (1976 Pontiac Sunbird.) There were 173 entrants, which means tons and tons of traffic. However an hour or so into my first stint, the road cleared up in front of me and got into a really nice rhythm through the first few corners of the race track. Then i noticed I was catching up to something.
I got closer through turn 5 and as I entered turn 6, i could very clearly make out the shape of a Corvair.
Now, turn 6 is both the
greatest
turn at Sears Point and possibly the one turn in which my dogshit slow Sunbird happens to really shine. Its a long, banked, nearly 180 degree downhill sweeper, with an uphill braking zone before it. I, however barely touched the brakes before turning in, thinking “by the end of this corner i’m gonna be right on his ass.”
But as i stared at those beautiful Corvair haunches i noticed something. “Hmmm...that can’t be water.....That must be uh....gasoline pouring out of the back of his car....all over the racing line”
Then I thought “I wonder if gasoline is slippery?”
That tought was immediately followed by “OOOOOOOOOOHHHHH GOD OHSHITOHSHITOHSHIT” as my hands did....things with the steering wheel (no idea, thank you baby jesus for that one) and my feet did the right thing which was to just kinda sit there and not panic/hit the brake.
I’m not sure i even lost much speed, it was without a doubt the biggest save of my life and i’m pretty sure i hit full countersteer lock in what would’ve been 4th gear. But its also entirely possible that about half a turn of oppo
felt
like full lock at the time. I dunno. It was crazy. Never look at a Corvair wrong. They will FUCK you up.
The end.

Looking forward to updates on your drive all the way back home! :D
You should do some Oppo mini-meets as you go!

“UN-safe”.........
![]() 04/16/2018 at 21:47 |
|
But unsafe IS dangerous, no?
![]() 04/16/2018 at 22:03 |
|
well, dangerous is unsafe, but unsafe is not always dangerous........
that is to say unsafe is more like leaving your knife open on the desktop, while dangerous is trying to juggle knives...... unsafe is inherent even with INACTION, and dangerous usually involves some sort of action......
they are very close relatives. and “unsafe at any speed” was a title for the the book by nader.....

Nader was the one who was unsafe at any speed. Lol

I’ll put out the word.

now if you were in the corvair, you could’ve taken comfort in knowing that if you put it int the wall it would be engine first.

I am 100 percent certain that if I’d been driving a corvair, it would’ve gone into the wall too.
